Legendary Hands… Now With Video!
Someone over at 2+2 asked about the “certain hands that go down in poker folklore and solidify a player’s reputation… I would be interested to hear [about] amazing hands by great players, like Ungar, Ivey, etc.”. So far the thread has 5 pages of replies. There are a number of hands in there that are just internet hand histories. But a lot of the legendary hands mentioned are easily tracked down on video.
So that’s what I did. Enjoy the pokery goodness…
Ivey vs Paul Jackson at the Monte Carlo Millions:
Johnny Chan correctly lays down on Poker After Dark, without much thought:
Dan Harrington’s squeeze play at the 2004 Main Event final table:
Moneymaker bluffs Farha at the 2003 Main Event heads-up:
Tom Dwan’s bluff against Greenstein and Eastgate on High Stakes Poker (previously):
Random guy folds jacks full on the river during the Main Event… and he’s right! (with bonus Matusow cheerleading):
A couple of guys go berserk bluffing each other at the 2006 US Poker Championship:
Huge pairs all over the place, including kings folding preflop and aces getting sucked out on:
Cory Zeidman sucking out on — and then slowrolling — Jennifer Harman:
Doyle Brunson lays down QQ on a ragged board to Chip Reese at the $50k H.O.R.S.E. final table:
Ivey vs Antonius in a $800k+ pot:
A Todd Brunson bluff gets Daniel to lay down the nut flush on HSP:
Josh Arieh, deep in the Main Event, chases the second nut flush, gets there on the river, and folds… correctly! (starts about 5:40 in):
If you can think of any more legendary hands, please post them in the comment section (with links to video, where applicable).

Don’t know where else to post this but you need to get the comments feed working on this site. It is almost impossible to find the latest comments without that. Don’t know if your problem is with Feedburner or what. If so, I’d stop using that service.
“I <3 Raymer!”
I’ve often wondered how the flop action went on this hand, because Justin Phillips only had a gutshot Broadway draw. He picked up his flush draw on the turn, so of course he’s sticking around there. And then the action card on the river…. yowzers!

Honestly though, all Gold would have to do in about 2 more hours is to switch it up. Start talking on his big hands, and shutup in his bluffs. Not difficult. Look at what Wasicka did to the table in season 3. They were all thrown for a loop. They ALWAYS put him on a big hand because of his prior play. I was fuming at the beginning wondering why he was playing so weak. He was just setting up his image. I don’t think I could be that patient to do that.
but, it’s like a lot of people say, you tend to get a better read of the scenario when you’re out of the hand then when you’re in it.
Maybe if we played more blind hands, we could get that out of the hand feel for the game. of look at our hole cards, and forget what they are, but play board texture and deception.
Honestly, when they say you don’t have to look at your hole cards, I’m starting to realize what they mean . . . maybe looking at our hole cards can blind us a lot of the times.
I’m not sure how Jamie Gold tricks anyone including pros but older HSP episodes have Negreanu and Harman not being fooled a bit while others were.
I just love how prahlad just reached back into his mind, just the way someone would walk into a big library and walk straight to the correct isle and pull out the book they were looking for right away, and recall the hand and call out his hand.
Some classic stuff.
I remember watching this whole movie on Cardplayertube a couple of months ago. Fascinating stuff. And yeah, catching Doyle with fear in his eye is truly rare.
Whatever you do, do not watch “High Roller”, the movie they made about Stu starring Michael Imperioli. It’s a mess.
I wouldn’t call this a “classic” hand. But I would call it a “classic Jamie Gold” hand. Gotta give that guy credit: he somehow managed to confuse and befuddle every one who played with him — even a seasoned pro like Prahlad. That’s just some great double-talk, there.

never have I seen doyle scared playing poker except in this scene. Wow, was Stu intimidating. The scene happens around the 5:45 mark of the video.
the last time I saw the 1980 hand was on the 1 in a million biography on Stu Ungar. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else.
Matusow and Raymer clashed sooooo many times that WSOP, normally you don’t see the eventual champion until later, but Matusow gave us a glimpse of the early champion.
Speaking of past champions, one we all love to hate was involved in a classic hand, I wish PF made this call since he had the right read . . .

This one has suffered from “Rounders”-related burnout, but still pretty cool. Love the visor on Seidel.
Love the acne on Hellmuth.
The Clash of the Cojones. Nice.
I know that Ungar’s other two wins are on PokerTube somewhere, but I haven’t seen this one either.
Yeah, this should be popping up on PokerTube sometime soon as well. They’re going backwards, starting at Season 6, putting all the old WPT episodes online. I think they’re midway through Season 4 right now, and the episode you’re talking about happened Season 3.
That’s just kamikaze. There are rumours floating around that Booth is busto, and I suspect it’s a propensity for plays like this that are at the root cause.

Can’t seem to find the legendary Doyle vs. Stu at the 1980 main event final hand.
or matusows blow up at the final table of the aruba tournament a few years back. Humberto Brennes’ brother was at that final table, you know which one I’m talking about?
