Hand of the Week

  • racing-handsOk, so I know there are people out there reading this thing. Time for you all to pull your own weight, and make your voices heard.
Today marks the start of a new (hopefully new and regular) feature called “Hand of the Week”. In it I hope to document the great calls, epic laydowns, and superior bluffs that happen during your average live Red Hot tournament.
So if you see something truly spectacular, let me know. It could even be a mathematically improbably bad beat, like quads losing to a straight flush. Drop me an e-mail at RCBlog@RedClubRoom.com and I’ll include it in a blog post in the coming weeks. Make sure to include as much detail as possible, for example, the names of the players involved, the action, the blind level, the venue, the tournament director, and any miscellaneous information that would make the story colourful and interesting.
Here’s one I personally witnessed, to get you started:

Best hand I’ve seen at Red Hot was a world class laydown. We were playing on a Friday night at Adam’s Rib, got to be a couple of years ago now. The blinds had just gone up to 50/100, and Richard Borrow arrived at our table, late to the tournament. He sat down in the under-the-gun position, looked down at his cards, and immediately raised to 300. Everyone folded (including myself in the small blind), and only Mike Milewski — Sr., not Jr. — made the call from the big blind.

    The flop came jack-jack-jack.

Mike checked , and Richard bet out 400. Mike thought for a moment and made the call. The turn brought a brick, and Mike checked again. This time Richard checked behind. The river was another brick, and Mike bet out now, throwing 600 into the pot. Richard thought for not that long — a relatively short time, considering the size of the laydown he was about to make — and folded pocket aces face up. The second nuts, and he laid it down just like that! Mike smiled wryly, and turned over one of his cards… a jack! The rest of the table falls off their chairs in astonishment.
    Sick. Seriously sick.
So now you know what I’m looking for. Go forth and collect stories, my humble readers!
